Work on Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport’s Terminal 2 (T2) and Northern Cargo Area officially began on Saturday.

T2 is a key Guangdong project, sited north of the airport between the first and second runways. It is designed to handle 31 million passengers a year and sits adjacent to the in?service Terminal 3 (T3) and the Satellite Concourse.

The new terminal will feature a 400,000?sqm terminal building, 53 aircraft stands, a 30,000?sqm interchange hub, a 30,000?sqm ground?transport center and a 143,500?sqm parking garage. It will be linked to T3 and the Satellite Concourse by rapid transit.

T2 will connect to major rail lines, including the Shenzhen–Dongguan–Huizhou Intercity Railway, Metro lines 11 and 12, and the Shenzhen–Daya Bay Intercity Railway, improving regional accessibility.

The Northern Cargo Area, located north of T2, will cover 804,000 sqm with a floor area of 570,600 sqm. Once complete, the cargo zone is expected to add more than 1.8 million tons of annual air?cargo handling capacity, strengthening logistics support for high?end manufacturing, cross?border e?commerce, and cold?chain services for fresh and frozen goods across the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area.

Driven by Shenzhen’s strong economy, the airport has seen rapid growth in recent years. In 2024, its passenger throughput surpassed 60 million for the first time. From January to July this year, the airport handled roughly 38 million passengers and about 1.16 million tons of cargo and mail — records for that period.

The airport now serves 63 all?cargo destinations worldwide, including 43 international and regional points across five continents.
